Installing and Updating the FLEXnet License Server

Quick Guide to configuring and updating the FLEXnet licensing service using LMTOOLS, as well as configuring network licenses on workstations. This guide is intended for those who manage Siemens/Mentor and DownStream licenses.

Updated: June 22, 2020Files: 1

This guide covers the configuration and updating of the FLEXnet licensing service on the server using the LMTOOLS program, as well as the configuration of network licenses on workstations. It applies to both DownStream Tech and Mentor Graphics licenses.

1. Configuring the FLEXnet licensing service on the server

These steps are performed only the first time.

  1. Install the FLEXnet licensing service software (DownStream Tech and/or Mentor Graphics).
  2. Open the new license file in Notepad and edit the lines ” SERVER” and ” DAEMON“:
    • DownStream Tech: C:\DownStreamTech\LicenseManager\license.dat
    • ja/tai Mentor: C:\MentorGraphics\License_files\license.txt
  3. Save the license file(s):
    • DownStream Tech: hakemistoon C:\DownStreamTech\LicenseManager
    • ja/tai Mentor Graphics: hakemistoon C:\MentorGraphics\License_files
  4. Launch LMTOOLS and select the Config Services tab, where you can configure the service (DownStream Tech and/or Mentor). Note: You can configure the settings using the same LMTOOLS program, regardless of the version. It is important that the first line of the settings refers to the “ lmgrd.exe ” program included with the DownStream/Mentor installation.
  5. On the Start/Stop/Reread tab in LMTOOLS, click Start Server. The license service will start, and the text “ Server Start Successful ” will appear at the bottom of the window.
  6. Open the license service log by clicking the ” View Log…” button on the “Config Services” tab. The log displays the startup routine, which should resemble the example in the PDF manual (Mentor Graphics). If there are no error messages in the highlighted area and the license options appear after the line “ Server started on...,” licensing is working properly.
  7. Close LMTOOLS. The license service is now ready for use.

2. Installing the software on a workstation (network installation, DownStream Tech)

Install the CAM350 and/or BluePrint software. The installation process now automatically configures the settings listed below, but check them if necessary:

  1. Set the environment variable ` ACT_INC_LICENSE_FILE ` to point to the license server (port_number@license_server_name), for example, ACT_INC_LICENSE_FILE = 7102@server1.
  2. Open the ” camnt95.ini” file in Notepad. The path for CAM350 v14.1 is C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\DownStream Technologies\CAM350 14.1. Note: You do not need to configure an ini file for the BluePrint program.
  3. In the file ` camnt95.ini`, change the setting for ` [FlexLM] ` to ` DisableEnv = No`.
  4. The installation is complete. The workstation retrieves the CAM350 or BluePrint license from the server based on an environment variable.

3. Installing Software on a Workstation (Network Installation, Mentor Graphics)

  1. Set the environment variable ` MGLS_LICENSE_FILE ` to point to the license server (port_number@license_server_name), for example, MGLS_LICENSE_FILE = 1717@server1.
  2. Install PADS. The installer will install the programs covered by the server license.
  3. The installation is complete.

4. Updating the license file on the server (LMTOOLS)

  1. Launch LMTOOLS and select the service name of the license you want to update.
  2. Select the Start/Stop/Reread tab and click Stop Server.
  3. Edit the new license file using Notepad, just as you did in step 2 of section 1. The sections to be edited are the same in both the old and new licenses.
  4. Make a backup copy of the current, working license file.
  5. Replace the old license file with the new one, just as you did in step 3 of section 1.
  6. Restart the license service from the Start/Stop/Reread tab in LMTOOLS: Start Server.
  7. Double-check that the license service has started correctly: LMTOOLS > Config Services → View Log….
